Hi, my name is Amanda Montgomery - Higham.
I studied illustration at Falmouth College of Art and Design in Cornwall, graduating in 2000. I now illustrate children's books for a living.
Any time now, the first of my own picture books, Max and the Doglins is due to be published by childs play international, so I'm very excited!
I began making teddy bears two years ago, after a friend (who also makes Bears) showed me how. I was immediately hooked!
My intention is to create a range of collectible bear characters from my own drawings, as an extension of my illustrator work.
I love making each teddy bear from recycled fabrics because I enjoy hunting for interesting bits & pieces and putting them together to create another form.
Not only does this make the teddy bears all one offs; but it also means that materials are being re-used, so I feel I'm doing a little bit for the planet!
I use a hand sewing machine, to sew all the collectible bears together, but admit to using an electric over locker to stop the edges of the fabric from fraying!
If I could find a hand over locker, I would be absolutely delighted, so if anyone out there knows if such a machine exists, please let me know!
Each of my teddy bears comes with a handwritten label, telling you a little bit about his/her history, i.e. what they were made from, their name and date of birth, etc.
And finally, because I use re-cycled materials, they won't cost the earth!
